Mirrabooka’s Community Diversity Officer Sergeant Don Emanuel-Smith has received the 2011 Police Officer of the Year Award.
Sergeant Emanuel-Smith was recognised for his professionalism, work ethic and commitment to the culturally and linguistically diverse community that he serves.
The award was presented at the Burswood Entertainment Complex by Commissioner Karl O’Callaghan APM.
“Don was nominated for his positive influence and his significant work in establishing relationships with community members and leaders representing the African, Sudanese, Burmese and Islamic communities, to name a few,” the Commissioner said.
“His daily work has enabled a joint understanding of key community and policing issues which are often complex and sensitive in nature, and he is often called upon by the community and other representatives to use his cultural understanding to facilitate meetings and responses to sensitive policing and community issues.”
Nominated by Inspector Kylie Whiteley of the West Metropolitan District Office, the 2011 Police Officer of the Year Award is yet another accolade Don has received for his work and commitment to policing and the community.
Two other worthy finalists were also recognised at the award ceremony: Detective Sergeant Rhonda Copeland for her dedication and work regarding family and domestic violence issues in the Laverton and Kalgoorlie areas; and Senior Sergeant Neville Ripp, currently Officer in Charge of the Dampier Peninsular Multi-Functional Police Facility.
The WA Police Officer of the Year Award was initiated by the Rotary Club of East Perth in1973 and provides state-wide recognition of police officers who have demonstrated commitment and dedication in their service to the WA community.Thirty nominations were received this year, both from members of the community, fellow colleagues and agencies that work in partnership with WA Police.
