Episodes in our policing history

Our History

The following brief accounts of some notable incidents or themes in Western Australian policing history cover just a few aspects of a complex and unusual past. Western Australia is probably the largest and most varied police jurisdiction in the world.

Policing began in 1829, the very year the Swan River Colony was founded. A fully organised and structured Police Force was established in 1853.

Additional stories will be added to this collection, ideas on events and issues are potentially endless.

Continual changes and adaptation is a central motif in our policing heritage, a state of affairs that may be regarded as essential for the well-being of the community.
