Accurate statistics
In the recording and reporting of fatal crash and fatality data there are numerous internal 'checks and balances' in place throughout the various stages of the process, culminating in a final report prepared by the State Coroner's Office.
Comprehensive statistics
The majority of publications that contain Western Australian fatal crash and fatality statistics do so only at the State level. The following tables contain statistics at the State, Police Region and District levels.
Current statistics
Generally, Western Australian fatal crash and fatality statistics have been published on a calendar year basis. The following tables contain historical statistics reported annually and current statistics that will be updated on a monthly basis.
Definitions
Fatal crash
A road crash where at least one person died within 30 days as a result of injuries sustained in the crash. The crash must occur on a road open to and used by the public, and involve a vehicle which was in motion. It cannot be an 'act of nature', an act of deliberate intent, or as a result of a prior event such as a heart attack.
Fatality
A person who dies within 30 days of a road crash from injuries sustained in that road crash.
