Name and Shame

Theft and vandalism from building sites affects the whole community, it costs consumers around $15 million a year. These costs are hidden but are enormous and are passed on to consumers by increasing costs in building contracts and delays in construction times.

The HIA Name and Shame campaign is run by builders with the aim to reduce theft and vandalism on Perth's home building sites and create a safe environment to build and reside.

The campaign began in 2003 and involves four key players; the Western Australian Police, the Housing Industry Association, Meridian Investigators and Builders and developers. Together with government agencies, the campaign aims to identify offenders of building site crime and ensure that they are prosecuted. On conviction all adult offenders are publicly named as a further deterrent to committing offences on building sites.

Funded by the industry Name and Shame increases public awareness of the problems and costs associated with building site incidents and offers substantial rewards for any information leading to the arrest of offenders.

About reporting suspicious activity

The campaign focuses on reporting "suspicious activities" and it is here that we ask for your help. We encourage you to support this initiative by reporting any "suspicious activity" you may see to our freecall number, 1300 2 REWARD (1300 273 9 273).

Any member of the public could receive up to $3,000 in a reward for information that leads to an arrest. To date $74,500 has been distributed in rewards with many further inquiries pending.

If you see people on site, and believe they are stealing or vandalising the site please record any details you can and phone the HIA Name and Shame hotline on 1300 2 REWARD. Or email our investigators on nameandshame@bigpond.com. Your details and information will remain confidential.

In circumstances where there are suspects on site and the offence is occurring at present, please contact police immediately on 131 444.
