Australians are vigorous consumers of technology, with one of the highest adoption rates in the world. This also translates into more offenders using technology to commit crimes. The Computer Crime Squad, established in 1997, provides the Western Australia Police with a means to address these crimes.
The Computer Crime Squad consists of two main areas of operation: Digital Evidence Teams and the Technology Crime Investigations Team.
Digital Evidence Teams
Digital Evidence Teams provide specialist services to WA Police investigators as well as other law enforcement or regulatory bodies within Western Australia. They provide electronic evidence services in the management, identification, preservation, interpretation and articulation of electronic evidence.
Team staff examine and analyse seized computers and storage media in order to identify and collect evidence.
Technology Crime Investigation Team
The Technology Crime Investigation Team is a specialist crime team investigating serious and complex electronic crime matters, and identifying and prosecuting offenders.
The team investigates when an:
- offence targets a computer or computer network;
- offender unlawfully uses a computer as per Section 440A of the Criminal Code;
- offence is committed predominately through the use of a computer system; or
- successful investigation of an offence requires specialist technical knowledge or equipment.
