The WA Police adheres to the WA Government Charter of Multiculturalism (PDF, 134kb) which is committed to the principles of multiculturalism and based on democracy, equality and respect for all members of the WA community.

The Western Australian Languages Services Policy aims to ensure equitable access to all State Government services for people who need assistance with communicating in English.

Language and communication services

Go to Dept. of Immigration and Citizenship website for help with translating and interpreting servicesIf you do not speak English, your English is limited, or you have a hearing impairment, an interpreter will be provided for you free of charge.

You can also contact a Translating and Interpreting Service on 131 450 or the WA Deaf Society on (08) 9443 2677 to discuss a policing matter with an interpreter.

Police Multicultural Advisory Council (PMAC)

PMAC, formerly known as the Western Australia Ethnic Advisory Council, was established in 1995 to give communities from culturally diverse backgrounds input into the development and implementation of new police policies and initiatives and to foster harmonious relationships between culturally and linguistically diverse communities and the Western Australia Police.

This council has representation from members of key multicultural communities, multicultural organisations, related government agencies, police personnel and people with expertise in the multicultural arena. Australasian Police Multicultural Advisory Bureau (APMAB)

At a national level, the Community Diversity Unit has worked closely with the Australasian Police Multicultural Advisory Bureau on various projects aimed at addressing the policing needs of people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and towards the development of national policies and programs.

However, APMAB ceased operation as of 31 March 2007. The role and function is being transferred to the new Australia New Zealand Police Support Agency (ANZPSA).

Help for victims of racially motivated crime

The WA Police State Security Investigation Group has responsibility for responding to racially motivated unlawful behaviour within the community or providing specialist support to the police districts when they respond to racially motivated unlawful behaviour.

The group comprises investigators with an understanding of community diversity issues and work to provide improved policing services to indigenous and multicultural groups. They have been working closely with the Equal Opportunities Commission and the WA Police Indigenous, Community Diversity & Corporate Research Unit.
