How do I apply?

Application forms are available at participating Australia Post outlets or online here. Once you complete the form, it must be lodged at a participating Australia Post outlet.

IMPORTANT NOTE: do not sign the form as your signature must be witnessed by an Australia Post Officer.

You will also need to present 100 points of ID at the time of application. What constitutes 100 points of ID?

An application fee of $55.50 is payable, please note that cheques are not accepted.

What happens next?

The information contained in your application is scanned and forwarded electronically for processing. WA Police, in partnership with the Federal CrimTrac Agency undertake the criminal records screening process. Australia Post staff are not involved in this process, and staff at Postal outlets will not see any criminal records.

How long will it take?

Most applicants will receive their NPC within five working days however there are a number of situations which may result in a longer timeframe.

If you have ever been to court or been charged with an offence (including traffic and interstate matters) or if you have a common surname (eg: Smith, Singh, Johnson) the application may require significant verification and vetting. As a result the issuing of a NPC in these cases may take up to 15 working days. If you haven't received your NPC within 15 working days please contact the NPC hotline on 1300 651 963.

If the application form is incomplete or incorrect Australia Post will contact you directly to amend the application. This will also result in a delay. If you believe there is an error on your application or if you wish to enquire on the status of your certificate please contact the NPC hotline on 1300 651 963.

Applications are posted to the address listed on your application form. If you change addresses after an application is made you will need to lodge a 'change of address notification' with Australia Post as WA Police can not amend your application.

Please Note:

Potential employers & licensing organisations should advise their customers to apply for a NPC as soon as possible. Delays in this regard could impact on employment commencement dates or the timely issuance of licenses.

Spent Convictions

Applications for a NPC also include a request to spend any eligible convictions in WA under the Spent Convictions Act 1988. As such WA Police will automatically spend any eligible convictions and you are no longer required to submit a separate "Spent Conviction" application form.

How long is a NPC valid?

A National Police Certificate lists the disclosable criminal history information that is available on the day it is issued. WA Police imposes no period of validity on NPCs; it is up to employers and organisations to determine the currency of a NPC they will accept.
