The first four rules for safe firearm handling are simple, easily memorised and if observed, will reduce the risk of incidents.
- Treat all firearms as loaded
- Always point a firearm in a safe direction (usually straight up, straight down, or down range, away from people), with the safety catch engaged and preferably open. Keep in mind what is behind a fibro wall!
- Always keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot with the target in your sights
- Always identify your targets and your surroundings
