WA Police has in place strict requirements for the accuracy of speed and red-light cameras. The testing of speed cameras in WA exceeds the standards required by the manufacturer and are matched only by other state police jurisdictions in Australia.
Every 12 months authorised trained personnel assess each speed device, test and seal the device, and provide a compliance certificate for each speed detection unit.
WA Police will use compliance certificates in court as proof that the device was tested and found to be operating correctly. The WA Police engages independent National Association of Testing Authorities accredited resources to conduct regular end-to-end system tests of all speed measurement cameras. Speed comparison testing is also conducted at red-light/speed camera sites. Speed accuracy, reliability and sensor tests are also performed by comparing a test vehicle's displayed speed (using an accurate calibrated speedometer display) and matching it with the speed shown on the camera measurement device.
Following the completion of mandatory calibration and testing the appropriate certificate is issued for each piece of equipment.
