Explained: How we choose our police cars
Ever wondered how a car becomes a police car?
In the past, the WA Police Force have traditionally relied on Holden and Ford to supply the majority of our operational vehicles.
With those cars no longer being manufactured in Australia, the WA Police Force could turn to European brands, like some of our eastern states counterparts.
It’s not a matter of picking a car from a showroom and putting lights and sirens on it. Vehicles must pass a series of vigorous and extensive tests both on the road and in the garage before they’re considered for police use.
Our police jurisdiction covers more than 2.5 million square kilometres so we require a variety of different vehicles to suit different environments and terrains.
