Rebirth of the Breath Straw

Journey of a straw

Last September a WA Police initiative commenced to recycle used breath straws. The straws had previously been utilised in random breath tests and were destined for landfill waste.

Since March this year three tonnes of straws (about 750,000) have been collected from major police traffic sites, processed and upcycled into new 120-litre red and yellow plastic rubbish bins. The bins are now being distributed throughout WA Police as new centralised waste receptacles.
