Types of fraud and the appropriate investigative authority.

Bank related fraud

If you have had money stolen or taken without your permission from your bank account via credit card, electronic funds transfers, cheque or ATM withdrawal. Contact your bank or financial institution, and where advised by them, report the incident to the Police Assistance Centre on 131444. NOTE: If required to report to Police, you will be asked to provide the following detail: Account Name, Account Type, Bank, Branch Location, BSB and account or Card number, and disputed transaction details (amount, date and time of transaction, business transaction conducted with). Please have this information when you call to make your report.

Criminal conduct by an employee or business partner

For complex / large value incidents involving theft or fraud relating to an employee or a business partner. Contact the Major Fraud Squad on (08) 9220 0700.

For minor incidents take all supporting documents and report it at your local police station.

Internet auction/online retail fraud

Report this type fraud to the Police Assistance Centre on 131444. If the offender receives the money in Western Australia, the matter will be investigated by local police. If the offender receives the money in another state, please go to Queensland Police website and follow the instructions. Technology-enabled crime

For complaints where technology was integral to the committing of the offence, please report the incident to the Police Assistance Centre on 131444. For more information please go to reporting technology crime.

Government fraud – State

For all fraud offences committed against State Government Departments. Please refer to the reporting fraud page prior to contacting the Major Fraud Squad.

Real estate fraud

Any matters relating to misconduct of a real estate agent report this type of incident to Dept of Commerce.

Criminal/misconduct by a solicitor or lawyer

Any matters relating to misconduct by a solicitor or lawyer in their professional capacity, contact The Legal Practice Board of WA. Any matters relating to criminal allegations such as theft, fraud or forgery against a solicitor or lawyer in their professional capacity, contact the Major Fraud Squad on (08) 9220 0700.

Work cover fraud

Any matters alleging fraudulent workers compensation claims or Work Cover fraud should be reported to WorkCover WA.
