The Children's Crossings and Road Safety Committee (Applications) provides a consultative and decision-making forum for reviewing applications requesting children's crossings within Western Australia.
The Committee also reviews current children's crossings to ensure they continue to meet the warrant criteria, infrastructure and safety standards. The Committee meets six times per year.
The Applications Committee is made up of voting and non-voting members from various government bodies and independent organisations.

Advisory members:
- Association of Independent Schools Western Australia
- Catholic Education Office of Western Australia
- Western Australian Council of State Schools Organisations
- Western Australian Local Government Association (WALGA)
Decisions made by the Applications Committee must be unanimous.
The Committee also provides a forum for the appeal process against decisions made by the Children's Crossings and Road Safety Committee (Applications).
The Children's Crossings and Road Safety Committee (Policy) meets six times per year and membership is from various government bodies and independent organisations.

Decisions made by the Policy Committee are based on the "majority rule".
The Children's Crossings and Road Safety Committee is autonomous with its decision-making process and is accountable to the Minister for Police. The Chair of the Committee operates with the delegated authority of the Assistant Commissioner, Specialist & Support Services.
The Children’s Crossings Unit (CCU) provides administrative support to the Children's Crossings and Road Safety Committee. It also provides information to schools and parent bodies who wish to apply for a children's crossing.
Application process for a children's crossing
Applicants must be either the School Principal, or President/Secretary/Chair of a recognised school/parent organisation, for example P&C or P&F. They are invited to apply for a Type A and/or Type B Children's Crossing.
A location may be approved as either a Type 'A' or a Type 'B' crossing. Both have similar legal significance but differ as follows:
- Type 'A' may be provided where a minimum of 20 students and 200 vehicle movements occur within the hour immediately before and immediately after school, for a primary school, or a combined primary/high school.
- Type 'A' may be provided where a minimum of 20 students and 700 vehicle movements occur within the hour immediately before and immediately after school, for a high school.
- Type 'B' may be provided where a minimum of 10 students and 100 vehicle movements occur within the hour immediately before and immediately after school, for a primary school or a combined primary/high school.
- Type 'B' may be provided where a minimum of 10 students and 350 vehicle movements occur within the hour immediately before and immediately after school, for a high school.
- Type 'A' Traffic Wardens are provided by the WA Police Force.
- Type 'B' Traffic Wardens are provided by the parent body of the school.

The Children’s Crossings Unit has put together resources for schools to use to help educate school children in the correct use of children's crossings and to safely cross roads.
The Department of Transport’s Your Move Schools Program provides schools with online tools, resources, professional learning and tailored behaviour change advice to increase walking, cycling and public transport trips and reduce car trips to school. The program helps reduce local congestion and parking issues around schools. The Your Move website provides schools with an interactive platform to share activities and successes with other schools.

The Department of Education helps children and young people make smarter choices by providing a resilience approach to road safety education.
It provides teaching and learning resources that are classroom ready, aligned to the WA curriculum and endorsed by Catholic Education Western Australia and the Association of Independent Schools of Western Australia.
